Many factors influence if a gas or electric oven and cooktop are better for a person. Electric ovens are cheaper to buy and install, but gas ovens are more affordable to run long-term. Gas ovens provide heat faster and evenly distribute the heat, while electric ovens are easier to use. It is also easier to clean electric ovens, but gas ovens are also easier to maintain. Cooktops have specific clearance requirements listed under the Australian Standard AG/601-AS5601. Both electric and gas cooktops have prerequisites, but gas has more of them due to the presence of an open flame. Here are some of the requirements of installing a cooktop:

• There must be 600mm vertical clearance for a combustible area, while a 200mm horizontal distance is also required.
• A distance of 600mm to the range hood is required, and 750mm to the exhaust fan.
• If the distance is not met, such as a splashback, then a non-combustible material must be applied to protect the surface.
